The Great Siege Events Museum

school excursion / competition


The Great Siege Events Museum in co-operation with The Projects and Initiatives Section of the Directorate for Educational Services and Agenda bookshop is organising a story writing and drawing competition.

 

Schools are being invited to organise excursions to visit The Great Siege of Malta Events Museum in Republic Square, Valletta and participate in the story writing and drawing competition on the theme ‘Walk through the Great Siege of Malta’.  The competition is open to students from 8 years of age upwards.

 

  • Entrance fee to participants    

Primary school students (from 8 years of age) pay €2.25 each;                

Secondary school students pay €2.50 each.              

Additionally, each student will be offered a healthy lunch and water for €2.00 each at Café Premier.

Part of the entrance fees paid by the school children will be refunded to schools in the form of book tokens. The value of the book tokens will be increased in value by Agenda Bookshop.

 

  • Competition

All visiting students may participate in the story writing and drawing competition. Prizes are being sponsored by Agenda Bookshop and The Great Siege Events Museum/Café Premier. Students should be encouraged to show innovation, creativity and imagination in their submissions. The entry should illustrate this to the full.

 

  • Theme

Walk through the Great Siege of Malta and express yourself about what struck you most. Creativity and originality will be given importance.

 

·         The Competition is divided in four categories:

 

Category A1    :           Primary Schools

Ø  Pupils from Year 4 to Year 6 in Primary Schools can participate;

Ø  Story writing of not more than 100 – 150 words in either English or Maltese. Submissions may be either handwritten or typed.

 

Category A2

Ø  Pupils from Year 4 to Year 6 in Primary Schools can participate;

Ø  Drawing or collage – any medium or combination may be used. The more creative the choice and use of medium, the better. The size should be A3. 

 

 

Category B1     :           Secondary Schools

Ø  Students from Forms 1 to Form 5 in Secondary Schools and Junior Lyceums can participate;

Ø  Story writing of not more than 200-300 words in either English or Maltese.  Submissions may be either handwritten or typed.

 

Category B2

Ø  Students from Forms 1 to Form 5 in Secondary Schools and Junior Lyceums can participate;

Ø  Drawing or collage – any medium or combination may be used.  The more creative the choice and use of medium, the better. The size should be A3. 

 

  • Prizes for each of the four categories

First prize:        €30 book voucher

Second prize:   €20 book voucher

Third prize:      €10 worth of stationery

 

Besides the above prizes a Francesco Balbi Award will be given to one entry which the judges think that renders best a child’s view of the Great Siege. It could be either a story or an artwork.

 

The winning entries will be:

Ø  put online on the website of The Great Siege on www.greatsiege.com.mt;

Ø  published in a booklet;

Ø  exhibited in the premises of The Great Siege.

 

  • Deadline for competition

The competition will run from October 2009 to April 2010. Students’ works are to reach the:

The date and venue of the prize giving ceremony will be announced later.  All submissions should have the name of the student, school stamp, VIP Kids Card No. and category written on a separate sheet enclosed in a sealed envelop and attached to the entry.

  • VIP Kids Card

Students who visit the show will be issued with a Great Siege/Café Premier VIP Kids Card. With this card students may visit the Great Siege for free when accompanied by two paying adults (parents, carers, grandparents etc).  This card also entitles students a selection of the children’s menu for free when they are accompanied by two paying adults for lunch or dinner at Café Premier.  Agenda Book Club card holders will be offered the same privileges.   

 

The Great Siege will promote the competition on its website, and Agenda will include the competition in its newsletter.

 

The decision of the jury is final.

 

Participation is only possible through a school visit to the Great Siege Events Museum. Individual participation is excluded from this School Excursion Programme.
